The 6-Step Windshield Replacement Process

Your windshield plays an important role in the safety of you and your passengers. Not only can it protect you from the elements and flying debris, it also supports the structure of your vehicle in the event of a roll-over accident. This is just one of the reasons why it's important to address windshield damage as soon as possible.

If you notice large cracks or chips, water leaks, severe pitting, or fogginess between your windshield glass layers, it may be time for a windshield replacement. Because windshield replacement requires specific materials and techniques, it's best to have the work done by a professional auto glass technician. Here's a step-by-step guide to the windshield replacement process.

Assessing Damage

A trained auto glass technician will first assess your windshield to determine whether you need a replacement. Sometimes, damage may seem minor, but a certified auto glass technician will be able to give you the best solution to your damaged windshield. Many auto glass companies offer free quotes before any work is done as well.

Removing the Old Windshield

The first step in removing your windshield is to remove the trim. The trim around your windshield is similar to the caulk around your home’s windows. This trim holds your windshield in place. A professional auto glass technician will usually remove the trim carefully using a razor blade. To remove the windshield from the car, auto glass technicians use large suction cups attached to certain points on the glass to take the windshield out without breaking it.

Preparing For Installation

Over time, dirt and debris can build up in the pinch weld of your windshield. The pinch weld is the area around your windshield where it rests in place. This dirt and debris need to be cleaned before new materials are applied. If your pinch weld is not cleaned out before installing your new windshield, it is possible that the new glass will not sit correctly on your vehicle.

Applying the Adhesive

The material used to adhere your windshield to your vehicle is called urethane. An experienced auto glass technician applies the urethane after your pinch weld has been thoroughly cleaned. This step happens rather quickly because the windshield must be put in place before the urethane sets completely. It is important that the urethane is applied properly by a certified auto glass technician. An even application with no gaps ensures your windshield is secure.

Placing Your New Windshield

Once the urethane is applied evenly, a trained technician will use the suction cups to line your new windshield up in the pinch weld. The windshield is pushed down against the urethane for several minutes, then the suction cups are removed and the urethane is allowed to fully cure. You'll need to wait for the urethane to cure before safely driving with your new windshield.

The time it takes for urethane to cure depends on the type of urethane used and the weather at the time. Once the urethane is set, any moldings, clips, and wipers will be re-installed. An experienced auto glass technician will also perform a final inspection to ensure your windshield is safe and secure.

ADAS Calibration

ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) technology is responsible for several safety features in modern vehicles including rear cross traffic alert, self-parking, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, and much more. If your vehicle has ADAS, calibration is necessary to ensure your safety features function properly with your new windshield. Certified auto glass technicians use specialized equipment to calibrate your ADAS features.
